Spring Fieldwork Checklist

Spring field season is here—are you ready to hit the ground running? Use this quick checklist to make sure your gear, tech, and safety essentials are prepped before you head out into the field.

Gear & Equipment

  • ✅ Inspect boots, waders, and waterproof gear for leaks or wear.
  • ✅ Clean and calibrate field instruments (e.g., GNSS, soil augurs).
  • ✅ Account for all items needed for the field:
    • Field Instruments:
      • Soil augur
      • GNSS device
      • Munsell Soil Color Book
      • Mobile device for data collection and photos
      • External power bank or solar charger
      • High-vis flags
    • Personal Gear:
      • Backpack
      • High-vis vest
      • Waders and/or muck boots
      • Work gloves (optional, for hand protection from briars, etc.)
    • Food and First Aid:
      • Water and snacks
      • Sunscreen
      • Bugspray
      • Hat
      • Sunglasses (tip: add flotation strap)
      • First aid kit
      • Patch kit or duct tape (for on-the-fly repairs)

Tech & Data Prep

  • ✅ Update fieldwork applications like Ecobot to the current version. If you’ve never tried a data collection and reporting app, now’s a good time to explore!
  • ✅ Ensure compatibility and connection between GNSS device, mobile device, and field applications.
  • ✅ Review best practices for taking clear field photos and documentation.

Field Safety & Comfort

  • ✅ Refresh first-aid kits and check for expired supplies.
  • ✅ Stock up on insect repellent, sunscreen, snacks, and a reusable water bottle.
  • ✅ Be prepared for unpredictable weather (rain gear, layers).
